I’m Kai Kaiser. My fascination with coastlines started growing up on St. Martin / St. Maarten — the Friendly Island, and the smallest inhabited island in the world divided between two nations. It has grown through living and travelling more widely across the globe.

Coastal Investigations is my personal collection of investigations, insights, field notes, and experiments on a single question: how is technology — including the recent big data and AI revolutions — helping us to better understand and value coastlines where it matters? Technology opens opportunities, but may also involve risks, and coastlines are where many of those trade-offs become concrete.

The site’s organizing idea is the coastline paradox: a coastline’s measured length grows the closer you look. It is a reminder that precision and scale are choices, and that those choices shape what we know and what we decide.
